trousers, shorts, torchlight, insect repellent, camera with fast film and sunglasses.
Program:
DAY 01 BKI-KINABALU PARK
Depart by 0830 hrs from your hotel for a 2 hour drive into the Crocker Range.
Enjoy superb mountain views as you travel to the Kinabalu Park at about 1,500m.
Check into your accommodation and after lunch we shall explore one of the
many trails that lead through the tropical Mountain Oak and Chestnut Forest.
Kinabalu is a botanist’s
paradise with over a thousand species of Orchids, numerous different Rhododendrons
and Pitcher Plants. The bird life is equally
fascinating with most species being montane, inclusive a number of endemic.
Stay overnight at Kinabalu Pine Resort. (Lunch & Dinner)
DAY 02 KINABALU PARK – PORING HOT SPRING – KINABALU PARK
Drive to Poring Hotsprings, Lowland Dipterocarp Forest makes most of the vegetation
at Poring and it is an excellent place to view lowland birds and some mammals.
A short trek to the canopy walkway for a bird’s eye view of the Tropical
Rainforest.
The Canopy Walkway is suspended between trees at a height of 40m and offers
an excellent opportunity to observe wildlife in the canopy. At Poring Centre,
you will have a chance to soak yourselves in the hot sulphur waters renowned
for its therapeutic properties. Return and overnight at Kinabalu Pine Resort.

DAY 03 KINABALU PARK – KINABATANGAN RIVER
Depart for a 4 hour drive to Kinabatangan river passing through scenic countryside,
rice fields, local villages and plantations. The overland journey to Sandakan
is over a stretch of 56km of unsealed road. Visit Gomantong Caves famous
for the chinese delicay, bird’s nest. Upon arrival, check into Sukau River
Lodge. The lower reaches of Kinabatangan River has the greatest concentration
of wildlife in Borneo. The most famous creature of all is guaranteed to be
sighted is undoubtedly the bizarre Proboscis Monkeys.
Take a boat trip and you will be rewarded with the sightings of this male
creature with large pendulous nose, fat belly and thick white tail, leaping
forcefully into space and crashing into nearby trees. Overnight River Lodge.

Day 04 KINABATANGAN RIVER – SANDAKAN
Wake up to the sound of Borneo. As the birds are most active at this time,
take another boat trip, this time to the Ox-Bow lakes. The many dramatic
and beautiful birds of the Kinabatangan region that may be sighted include
elegant egrets, several species of kingfishers, the oriental darter which
dives underwater to catch it’s prey, swift and vividly coloured Bee-eaters
and hornbills.
Take a walk along one of the many nature trails designed to view birds and
wildlife in the scenic riverine rainforest. Some mammals may be sighted in
a hide located next to a saltlick. After lunch, overland to Sandakan. Overnight
Renaissance Sandakan. (Fullboard).
DAY 05 SANDAKAN – SELINGAN ISLAND
1000 hrs transfer to jetty for Selingan Island for swimming, sunbathing or
snorkeling (gear can be hired locally). In the night, we wait for the famous
green turtles to come ashore to lay eggs. Overnight in simple chalet. (Fullboard).
DAY 06 SELINGAN ISLAND – SEPILOK – AIRPORT
After breakfast, depart the Island to Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary to visit
the Orang Utans which have been orphaned, illegally captured and injured
being rehabilated to be sent back to the wild. Transfer to hotel in Sandakan.
